NEW 1 DAY COURSE-
Update your knowledge on the Principles of Electrical
Fires
In association with Interflam 2016, Dr.
Vyto Babrauskas will offer a new course to update participants on
important information in the field of electrical fires.
Fires originating from electrical causes are specialized and require
specialized investigation skills. If the personnel involved are
not sufficiently knowledgeable on electrical fires, such incidents
are likely to be misidentified or miscategorized. This is a rapidly
evolving field, thus it is important for practitioners to get
the benefit on the latest problems, issues, findings, and research
results. The course will include recent changes in the NFPA 921
Guide affecting electrical fire investigation.
The most significant changes have been with regards to metallurgical
identification,
where usable laboratory techniques are now offered for differentiating
arc-melting from fire-melting damages. The course will also cover
diverse recent research findings
in the electrical area, along with safety
issues arising from new technologies such as ‘smart
meters’ and CSST. Investigation
of fires involving dielectric breakdown of insulation
will also be covered—a topic which is now being better understood
due to recent research. Individuals in certain countries may have
seen numerous studies presented in recent years claiming that
metallurgical laboratory methods have been developed for distinguishing
between ‘cause’ and ‘victim’ arc beads.
In fact, these concepts are an example of what is sometimes referred
to as “junk science,” and the course will discuss
the lack of sound science basis of such schemes.
Numerous
delegates will have attended the Principles of Electrical Fires
course given in previous years at Interflam. The
new course takes up where the previous course left off. However,
some background material will be offered so that the course will
be suitable both for delegates who attended previous Principles
of Electrical Fires courses, and those who have not.
Extensive handouts will be provided covering various topics of
the course.

Dr
Vyto Babrauskas
Dr Babrauskas was the first person to ever receive a Ph.D. degree
in Fire Protection Engineering. He headed the fire test method
development programs at NIST for 16 years before becoming a consultant.
Vyto
has taught graduate-level engineering courses at the University
of British Columbia and at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, has
given hundreds of lectures and presentations and is the author
of over 300 papers on fire safety. He is the Author of the authoritative
treatises "Ignition Handbook" and "Heat Release
in Fires", and serves in an editorial capacity for several
fire safety journals.
In
recent years, he has been regularly teaching classes to fire investigators
on fire science principles.
