Fires
in upholstered furniture are dangerous. Fire statistics show
that the majority of European casualties are due to fires
in upholstered furniture. Yet little is known about the burning
behaviour of these products and very few procedures are available
for assessing their hazard. The atmosphere in a room in which
an upholstered furniture is on fire should be possible to
predict and the corresponding hazard to people should be analysed. The
Combustion Behaviour of Upholstered Furniture (CBUF) Programme
was initiated by the Commission of the European Communities
DGXII, to develop methods for measuring the burning behaviour
of upholstered furniture needed for the implementation of
possible EU or national legislation or for European standardisation.
